In the heART of Claremont
In Southern California, sometimes there is often a misconception that major works of art can only be seen in downtown Los Angeles, but that is not necessarily true. The city of Claremont, with its eclectic vibe and welcoming atmosphere, offers art enthusiasts a chance to peruse galleries and shops that appeal to all tastes and walks of life, proving that residents of the Inland Empire do not have to travel far to view or purchase great art. Among many of the hidden gems found throughout Claremont’s downtown area, four galleries in particular provide sophisticated art by talented artists that necessitate a visit. All are within walking distance from each other and offer hours of enjoyment. The exhibitions open on the first Saturday of each month, coinciding with the Claremont Art Walk, so get out there and see great art!

Kathleen Graulty and Julian Lucas, are the co-founders of this very hip gallery and bookstore. Last month, the Mirrored Society’s gallery offered visitors twelve beautifully printed, black and white images from Brittany Markert’s project “In Room’s”. Markert’s ongoing project focuses on the surreal adaptation of her vibrant thoughts, memories, and dreams, which captures the imagination in a fascinating, mysterious way much like the work of her mentor, Todd Hido. The Mirrored Society is currently exhibiting Maya Luque’s Interception, whose works are made of mostly beeswax and entice memory and sensory stimulation. The exhibition runs through the end of October.

Elizabeth Carr’s new gallery “Studio C”, which exhibits a variety of artists, recently showed works by Printmaker and teacher Denise Kraemer titled “I am Not Broken”. Kraemer’s works, which are created using various artistic techniques, are colorful creations that reach out to the subconsciousness of viewers. Kraemer’s reoccurring silhouettes of children and birds, invite dialog that is stimulating and thought-provoking.
Currently, Studio C is showing the work of Sylvia Megerdician which will be exhibited until November 5th, 2016.

Christina Franco, SPACE gallery owner, recently reopened her gallery after relocating from Pomona. Last month, SPACE exhibited the works of Jaime Munoz from his project “Systems”. Munoz’s work explores language, subjective and objective systems, craft, and the monochromatic color palette. Munoz’s work, detailed with Latin American iconography, challenges viewers to investigate the meaning of their creation. Currently, SPACE is exhibiting the photographs of Rock and Roll photographer Harold Sherrick, which runs through the end of October.

Bunny Gunner Gallery and frame shop is run by co-owners Susie Eaton and Juan Thorpe. Susie and Juan’s gallery provides an intimate space to view beautiful works of art. Last month’s exhibition featured the drawings and paintings by Steve Comba, Associate Director and Registrar at the Pomona College Museum of Art.
