Recently, Christine Carr, Associate Professor in the Department of Art and Visual Culture College of Design at Iowa State University, shared work from her university’s photo club. The variety of images provide a glimpse into the thoughtful experimentation and exploration of contemporary concepts that invoke curiosity from the viewer. This invoked curiosity is piqued especially within the works of Ashley Minnick, Katie Duval, Chelsea McConnell, and Zoe Broerman; where the art and creativity of storytelling compel the audience to ask questions.

Photography at Iowa State University
At Iowa State University the photography area is tucked into the Art and Visual Culture
Department. Students begin their first year in the interdisciplinary College of Design
core studying art and design principles. In the second year, they take the Art
Department core, which includes classes in ceramics, digital media, furniture design,
metals, painting, photography, printmaking, and textiles. After that, students take
advanced classes in areas of their choice.
Classes in photography provide instruction in a range of techniques while focusing on
creative development. The introduction level is black and white darkroom photography,
which includes film exposure and development, camera operation, and darkroom
printing. Advanced classes cover color, digital input and output and experimentation
with medium and large format cameras. Emphasis is on developing a critical language,
experience with a variety of approaches, and a solid portfolio that reflects the passions
of each artist.

The Photo Club
The Developed Photo Club of Iowa State University connects people from a variety of
disciplines and skill levels through photography. The primary goal of Developed is to
offer students the opportunity to present their imagery, build their portfolios, and
advance critiquing skills. Developed offers an open forum for critique of photographic
imagery and continuously pushes members to realize new levels within their own work.
Along with managing the Sink Gallery and putting together various showings of work,
Developed members are challenged with bi-weekly assignments, engage with lecture
series, and strive to expand their photographic understandings.
